Report: Russia to import Latin American soy instead of US
MOSCOW, Feb 11 (PRIME) -- Russia plans to replace soy bean imports from the U.S. with supplies from Latin America, Agriculture Minister Alexander Tkachyov said in an interview to Rossiya 24 television channel broadcast late on Wednesday.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Federal Veterinary and Phytosanitary Oversight Service said it will impose temporary restrictions on imports of corn and soy beans from the U.S. starting from February 15 because of infection, while telephone negotiations were in vain.
“We will import soy from Latin America,” he said.
The Russian Agriculture Ministry also said in a separate statement that the country is ready to increase imports of meat, dairy products, fruit, and vegetables from Uruguay.
Russian Deputy Agriculture Minister Sergei Levin and Uruguay’s Livestock, Agriculture, and Fisheries Minister Tabare Aguerre signed a memorandum of understanding between the two ministries on Wednesday, and the memorandum allows the two countries to improve cooperation in the sector, the ministry said.
